MALIBU: Fun things to see and do for a WEEKEND GETAWAY in the Bu!

Things to do in Malibu- Beach Frills Travel Blog

Planning a weekend visit to Malibu? We can help!

We love helping you look on trend while chasing the sun in our bathing suit beach cover ups, resort wear and vacation beach dresses, but we also love inspiring you to explore new destinations. Why not start with iconic Malibu? In this edition of our #beachfrillsandthrills travel blog, we'll help you start planning your next weekend getaway there.

Accommodations, restaurants, lounges, bars, and things to do and see:

We love Malibu for so many reasons and we want you to experience the best of it! Malibu is situated about 30 miles west of Downtown LA, and about 30 miles from LAX along Pacific Coast Highway, just north of Santa Monica. Here's some of our favorites in Malibu and a guide of where to stay, what to do, see and eat!

Accommodations:

AirBnB
Since Malibu isn't dense with hotels, a popular choice of accommodations is AirBnB in Malibu. AirBnB offers a variety of accommodations, for everyone's budget. You'll find luxury homes for rent, some right on the water's edge, to charming little Yurts, private hideaways, or even an adorable Airstream Camper with an adventurous outdoorsy touch, offering beautiful views of the ocean and sunset, ending with an evening under the stars.

Malibu Beach Inn
If AirBnB isn't for you, and you're looking for more of a hotel-like setting with hospitality at its finest, and the "at your service" feel, you may prefer Malibu Beach Inn. The hotel also offers the convenience of having the sand between your toes within steps, with it's unbeatable location on the water, just south of the Malibu pier. Views to die for, fine dining on-site, and pampering at the spa... what more do you need for some Malibu R&R?

Calamigos Guest Ranch & Beach Club
Another one of our favorites is the beautiful and charming Calamigos Guest Ranch, with its rich history of being family-owned and run for 75 years. Their elegant resort is nestled within nature, giving you the ultimate feeling of "getting away." If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city-life, this might be your haven. It's no wonder this resort is a popular wedding venue choice for many.

Nobu Ryokan Malibu
And last but not least, we had to feature the newest and chicest of them all: the World's first Nobu Ryokan which debuted in Malibu in 2017. This gorgeous gem of Japanese hospitality is the result of a total makeover of a vintage motel that once stood there. Partners in this exclusive hotel were Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Robert De Niro. It's situated next to the Little Beach House Malibu (Soho House's members-only hang-out). Soak in luxury in your private Japanese teak soaking tub, and have your delicious sushi conveniently brought up by room-service. Doesn't that sound lovely? We think so.

Our picks for Malibu restaurants, lounges and bars:

Posh celebrity hang-out with ocean view: Nobu Malibu

Nobu definitely lives up to the hype. Your chances of spotting a celeb here are high, as this outdoor/indoor sushi spot with a killer view is THE place to see and be seen. Enjoy your sashimi with a gorgeous view, with the likes of Chrissy Teigen, the Kardashians/Jenners, and tons of big names in Hollywood.

Member of Soho House or know someone who is? Little Beach House Malibu

Little Beach House Malibu is situated next to Nobu, in fact, they share the same parking lot. This particular Soho outpost requires an add-on of $1,500 to the all-houses access fee Soho Members already pay, keeping it just a tad bit more exclusive than the others. It features prime ocean views, bar and restaurant, two outdoor terraces, and a second floor seating area.

Laid-back hang-out: Moonshadows

Moonshadows has a fun atmosphere and you'll have a bit of an easier time scoring a prime-time reservation with less planning involved, making it our go-to when feeling spontaneous! The restaurant has breathtaking views through the windows and a patio lounge situated at the water's edge, or sometimes over the crashing waves when it's high-tide. The menu offers a unique fusion of Asian, Italian and American cuisines. The patio lounge also offers live DJ's on certain nights, and weekends.

Oceanside brunch and romantic candlelit dinners: Geoffrey’s Malibu

Geoffrey's offers a California-style international cuisine with a romantic setting, offering a backdrop of waterfalls and tropical plants, creating a relaxing and peaceful Mediterranean meets California Coast vibe. Enjoy mimosas and oysters with friends at brunch, or bring your loved one for a candlelit dinner to celebrate something special!

Feeling outdoorsy and would like your drinks with a side of nature? Malibu Cafe at Calamigos Ranch

Yee-haw! Gather up the squad and head over to the ever so charming Malibu Cafe at Calamigos Ranch. The woodsy, beautiful outdoor setting offers a unique dining experience which they've coined as "Nouveau Barbeque" honoring the cowboys and cowgirls that came before them. Stay until the light fades and you'll find yourself in a whimsical twinkle-lighted haven in the woods. This is high on our list of most Instagrammable places in Malibu, with all the adorable little photo-opps on site.

A favorite for the Locals to brunch: Malibu Farm

The light and airy decor with the sweeping views off the quaint Malibu Pier make this a must-do for anyone visiting. Malibu is the perfect little getaway for some R&R, and spots like this do the trick. From the pier, you'll have a view of Surfrider beach, with paddleboarders and surfers in the water, and a plus for families visiting is the kid-friendly atmosphere the restaurant provides. Don't miss this gem.

Activities and things to do:

Visit the beautiful beaches along the coast of Malibu:
CaliforniaBeaches.com provides details of all the beaches in Malibu, including the hidden and private beaches. Most of the beaches in Malibu are quieter than the beaches down south, towards Santa Monica and Venice, so we're confident you'll be able to find some peace and quiet on the sand, with the waves crashing in the background at one of these beaches.

Malibu Wines and Malibu Wines Safari:
Touring the safari with fun little stops to wine-taste, and meeting Stanley the Giraffe is one of our favorite Malibu adventures! Stanley is "Instagram famous" so we're sure you've seen him on social media! In addition to Stanley, they also have other exotic animals such as a zebra, camel, llama, alpaca, and yak at Saddlerock Ranch. They even have special events like Baby Goat Yoga (yes, you read that right!) and Saddlerock Gardens offers fun activities like musical hikes and concerts in the park. For the Wines Safari, you have the choice to choose from different tour packages, and the wine tastings on each stop of the Safari tour are a nice touch, to relax and spend time with friends and loved ones. After the tour, you can order bottles or glasses of wine and picnic down at the Tasting Room at Malibu Wines. It’s an adorable outdoor setting with casual group seating plus plenty of room to lay down a blanket and just enjoy the beautiful California weather.
